G3 in concert

Guitarists Joe Satriani, John Petrucci and Uli Jon Roth, touring together as G3, needed their single lighting rig to deliver different looks for their three separate sets, before they played together in the show finale.

Alastair Watson, who designed both production and lighting, as well as production managing, specified 16 SolaHyBeam 1000s, a hybrid LED fixture with spot, wash and animation functions, by manufacturer High End Systems.

“I effectively had three lights in one,” he says. “To achieve the appearance of three separate lighting designs, I used the HyBeam as a wash light for one band, primarily as a profile light for another band, while mixing it up for Satriani.”

He supplemented the HyBeams with six Hex LED arrays and two HES Axon media servers for visual content, all controlled with a Full Boar 4 console and wing.

“There is no disparity in colour – the HyBeams are identical out of the box,” says Watson. “The bright white LED engine from HES is superior to anything out there. The 20,000 lumens per fixture for something of that small size is incredible.”

Felix Lighting provided the rig for the US tour at venues including Chicago Theatre (cap. 3,600), New Jersey Performing Arts Centre (3,350) and State Theatre (2,200), Minneapolis, with PRG supplying European dates such as France’s La Seine Musicale (cap. 6,000) in Paris, the UK’s London Eventim Apollo (5,000), and Switzerland’s Volkshaus (1,200) in Zürich.
